We had the crew from XUL down to whip up a collab, and we wanted to do something a little out of the ordinary. So we set out on recreating the West Coast IPA profile, but with a Haze-craze juicy flair.
We started with a grain bill of Riverbend 2-Row and Wheat, hit with a little Crystal 60 malt in there for color and a touch of sweetness. We hit it with the typical Juice-is-loose mash and hopping regimen, however, but upped the bitterness and the carbonation a bit from what we’ve been used to these days. We used a combo of Columbus, Centennial, and Citra to keep it classical, and then hit it with a little Wakatu for extra amperage.
The result is like jumping into the Dolorean and gunning it to 88. Starting off on juicy waves of Orange and Grapefruit, pithy and bitter resin, underripe Peach, some Cantaloupe rind, and just a touch of grassy green stuff. The bitterness is surprisingly well balanced with the big and fluffy mouthfeel, and lends to the crisp finish we all knew and loved at one particular time. Bitter, resinous, juicy, and hella opaque. Just ask Rick Moranis, and he’ll tell you, “I am the Keymaster is dope AF”...but you might have to punch it out of him.
